On the processes of growth of the living being and the relevance of relational categories to understand It digital On the processes

categories to understand It
Anno: 2017
Recent advances in biological sciences suggest that living beings have to be understood mostly in systemic terms, and characterized by the unitary integration of multiple level of causal dynamics over the time of their «life histories»...

Robustness as Organized Heterogeneity digital Robustness as Organized
Heterogeneity
Anno: 2016
Robustness, the property by which living systems maintain a function despite external and internal perturbations, is currently one of the most powerful cross-disciplinary concepts relating both biological and artificial systems on the basis of their common organisational principles. In this paper we argue that robustness can be also considered an emergent property that plays a pivotal role in fostering the integration of functional levels in the organismal system...

Emerging Epistemologies in Life Sciences digital Emerging Epistemologies in Life Sciences
Anno: 2015
There is a tendency in scientific practice to elaborate complex and multilevel models to account for biological dynamics. Systemic approaches have been advocated to account for such phenomenology, so that models often emerge as networks of dynamic interactions with elements that acquire a specific explanatory relevance depending on the scientific question...

Semantic roots of reductionism limits digital Semantic roots of reductionism limits
Anno: 2014
The present work aims to demonstrate some reasons of the explanatory model shift in science, to overcome the limits of reductionism, which does no longer allow a correct understanding of the phenomena it refers to. We will take as example a current debate in medicine...

Anno: 2012
This essay shows how it’s possible to focus on an aspect of reductionism from a methodological point of view that is compatible, at least in principle, with a systemic perspective. The first part of this paper deals with the epistemological assumptions of interpretive models of cancer. Interestingly, they appear to be opposite each other, since they call on reductionist or anti reductionist perspectives. However, in the first sections it’s also showed that reductionist models present certain dimensions that are not of a reductionist nature. The paper also shows how analytical and synthetic approaches are mutually implicated. Reductionism, understood as an epistemological approach and not an ontological claim, plays a role in the general explanation and comprehension of a biological phenomenon, yet it specifically explains that of tumours. This allows the possibility of taking a reproducible subject of the investigation, to an organizational level, which ultimately is integrated ontologically with other levels as well.
