Virgilio Melchiorre

Virgilio Melchiorre (Chieti, 18 gennaio 1931) è professore emerito di Filosofia morale presso l’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, dove ha insegnato anche Filosofia della storia e Filosofia teoretica. Oltre al suo costante interesse per Kierkegaard, ha rivolto la sua attenzione anche a Kant, Hegel, Marx, Gramsci, Mounier, Maritain, Husserl, Heidegger e Maréchal. Sul piano teoretico, la sua ricerca è volta a coniugare il metodo della fenomenologia trascendentale con i grandi temi della metafisica classica. Presso l’Editrice Vita e Pensiero ha diretto la rivista Comunicazioni Sociali e dirige la collana “Metafisica e storia della metafisica”.

The theme of eschatology is not recurrent in Kierkegaard’s works. Nevertheless the conjugation between temporality and eternity shown by Kierkegaard agrees with the way in which the eschatological conscience has been examined by the contemporarytheology. The connection present in Kierkegaard between historical time and eternal destination of the human being can be summed up under the theme of an eschatology of the present. This connection is cleared both under the ethical-religiouspoint of view by the concept of «repetition (Gjentagelse)» of the past looking at the future, and under the profile of the «contemporaneity» with Christ. The task of the spirit as synthesis of temporality and eternity is given in the constant anticipation/participation of the ultimate. In this article I consider the structure of the finite consciousness as referring to a originary infinite principle that necessarily establishes it; nevertheless this principle remains ineffable. I will show how the multiplicity of religious languages and traditions could be the expression of this ineffable Name. The awareness of our limitations allows, indeed, the dialogue and a sort of completion among different traditions. Finally, I take into account the inclusive nature of various religious symbols as a possible way to reach a common, and temporarily ultimate, apex of the religious consciousness.
