The article offers a critical edition of Anfredo Gonteri’s first distinction in the first book of the Sentences. First, an introductory study analyzes Anfredo Gonteri’s original position, which touches two main aspects of fourteenth century’s philosophical thought: the capacity of the human soul (finite or infinite?), and the way in which creatures can enjoy the beatific vision. Anfredo Gonteri deals with concepts treated also by other relevant masters, like Duns Scotus, Francis of Meyronnes, Richard Kilvington and Adam of Wodeham. Anfredo also seems to anticipate John of Ripa’s attitude toward a problematic interpretation of an Avicennian thesis already criticized by John Duns Scotus. Thus, Anfredo Gonteri’s perspective appears to be highly significant in the context of mid-fourteenth century’s metaphysics and of the treatment of the topic of the beatific vision.
