How do we communicate or share a singular existence? What are the limits, and potential, of a philosophical language? In this paper, I will offer what I believe are Kierkegaard’s answers to these two questions. I will do this by looking specifically at elements of Works of Love. This text, though coming at the midpoint of his authorship, is the highest expression and culmination of his authorship. It re-animates the subjectivity/objectivity arguments of earlier works such as Fear and Trembling, Either/Or, and Concluding Unscientific Postscript to Philosophical Fragments, anticipates the final attacks upon Christendom, all while exploring the nature of the love ethic more systematically than anyone has since. It is his most magisterial work and one which explores, better than any of his other writings, both the possibilities/nature of communicating or sharing a singular existence of love, as Keywords: love, communication, singularity, Works of Love, existence, language |
