The discussion on time in the Second Part of the Parmenides is one of the most complex arguments in the entire Platonic corpus. Various scholars have regarded it as a paradoxical section in which Plato constructs sophisms and absurd arguments for their own sake. This paper offers a new interpretation of the discussion on time, demonstrating how it masterfully exemplifies the protreptic value of Platonic writing. Plato writes with the purpose of encouraging the reader to recognize the presented problems and to find the solutions independently, thereby engaging in philosophy. In this discussion on time, which is complete and autonomous in itself, Plato provides clues and guides the reader through the process of discovery. Particularly with the introduction of the Instant, he draws the reader closer to the heart of the dialectical connection between the sensible and intelligible dimensions that characterize the Platonic view of reality.
