Strawson rightly maintained that formal logic is not satisfactory when applied to natural language because natural language contains terms with implicit logic that cannot be entirely encompassed by formal rules of inference. However, Strawson did not fully grasp that this is a consequence of the epistemic human condition, which is constantly changing since all the relevant information is never available. In contrast, formal logic presupposes a context in which the information is complete and definitive. Our inferences often deviate from the deductive model, exploiting an open-textured rationality not exhausted by the demonstrative procedures of logic and mathematics.
